The Hoppings is set for a bustling first weekend with more sunshine following a non-stop opening day. The annual fair launched on Newcastle Town Moor on Friday, marking the start of its 10-day run.
Elevate85: The World's Tallest Mobile Ride
Among the approximately 400 attractions, the new £3 million Elevate85 dominates the site. Billed as the tallest travelling ride globally, it stands at 85 metres tall. Ryan Crow of Crow Events, which operates The Hoppings, said: "It's 85 metres tall; it's the tallest mobile ride in the world. It was built in Austria, designed in Germany, and all the lights were installed by an Italian company – but the motivation was from England. It debuted in Berlin for Christmas and it's here now."
The ride offers stunning views from the top, looking out over the fairground and the wider city. "I wouldn't particularly say it's an adrenaline junkie ride, but you do have to have a good stomach for heights," Ryan added. Described as a 'star flyer-type' ride, Elevate85 follows last year's introduction of the Drop Tower, as Crow Events aims to keep things fresh for regular visitors.
Price and Ride Rules
Price: The cost to try Elevate85 is £7. From the top, those with a head for heights can enjoy panoramic views across the fairground and surrounding city.
Rules: Elevate85 has a height requirement of 1.2 metres (just over 3 feet 11 inches), meaning some young people can also enjoy it. A board at the bottom of the steps shows a red line for measuring. Bags and hand-held items are not allowed; riders should empty pockets and secure loose items like phones, wallets, keys, and coins, as operators are not responsible for losses.
People are advised not to ride if they are scared of heights, suffer from vertigo, are epileptic, prone to panic attacks, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
