US adds only 29,000 jobs in September, far below forecasts

The US economy added far fewer jobs than expected in September, with nonfarm payroll employment rising by just 29,000, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That figure is significantly weaker than the 90,000 new jobs economists had forecast.

Little change across major industries

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said employment in all major industries changed little over the month.

In a further blow, August's jobs report was revised down to show 29,000 fewer jobs created than first estimated, with the figure now standing at 133,000 rather than 162,000.

July figures also revised lower

July's job gains were also revised down by 31,000, from +21,000 to -10,000, meaning the US economy lost jobs in that month.
