The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has launched an expanded digital medical service that could process driving licence applications up to 10 days faster than paper applications. The new online tool, rolled out this August, allows motorists to check how around 1,600 medical conditions may affect their ability to drive and then notify the DVLA.
Thousands already using the service
According to Tim Moss CBE, DVLA Chief Executive, more than 60,000 drivers have already switched to the online medical service. He said: “More than 60,000 drivers have already switched to our online medical service, saving time, avoiding paperwork and benefiting from a faster application process.”
Moss added that customers can save up to 10 days by applying online rather than by post. He also noted that drivers using the service have collectively avoided tens of thousands of pounds in postage costs, with 24/7 access and the ability to track progress online.
Faster initial action and growing uptake
The new system allows the DVLA to take the first action on an application in some cases, potentially referring it to a healthcare professional within 24 hours. The DVLA stressed that online services are proving increasingly popular, with almost 50% growth in digital uptake over the last year alone.
Roads Minister Justin Madders said: “Drivers need to be able to report medical conditions quickly and easily. I understand their frustration and that’s why I’ve been working closely with the DVLA to push forward improvements to the services drivers receive.”
Madders added that the quick, easy-to-use online service is making it easier for drivers to report medical conditions, making roads safer and saving people time and money. The initiative is already working for thousands of customers using the service.
