Dettol vs Dr. Beckmann washing machine cleaners: only 1 is worth buying
Dettol vs Dr. Beckmann washing machine cleaners – only 1 wins

A test of two popular washing machine cleaners found that only one eliminated stubborn musty odours, while the other left the smell intact.

Why washing machines need deep cleaning

Appliances designed to clean possessions, such as washing machines, are not naturally pristine. In fact, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and foul odours. A senior lifestyle reporter typically uses soda crystals for routine freshening, but on this occasion a more powerful solution was needed because soda crystals could not remove the strong smell coming from the drum.

The two cleaners tested

The products tested were the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner and the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner. Both were available at a similar price: the Dettol product cost £2.99, while the Dr. Beckmann option cost £2.19.

First, the Dettol cleaner was tested. One tablespoon was diluted in 200ml of hot water to wipe down the detergent drawer, glass door, and seal. This solution proved reasonably effective at removing hardened soap residue and minor patches of surface mould. The drawer was then returned to the machine, the remaining solution poured in, and the appliance ran on a 60-degree wash cycle. After the cycle, the drum looked noticeably shinier, but the foul smell remained when the door was opened.

Dr. Beckmann delivered better results

Next, the Dr. Beckmann cleaner was tested. Since the drawer, seal, and door needed no additional work, the complete bottle was poured into the detergent drawer. Although the instructions suggested a minimum 40-degree cycle, a 60-degree setting was selected to ensure a fair comparison.

After the cycle completed, opening the door revealed only a delightful floral scent, with no hint of musty smell. Beyond cleaning the machine itself, this product, when used regularly, is formulated to promote energy-efficient washing and prolong the appliance's operational life.

Verdict

While the Dettol cleaner proved adequately effective at addressing the drawer, it underperformed when it came to the drum. Given that it performed better and cost less, the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner comes highly recommended.
