The NHS has announced a new rewards programme encouraging daily 30-minute walks, with discounts for participants. This has boosted interest in London's 'mega walks' — long urban routes that explore the city's parks, canals, and neighbourhoods. While some aim for a full marathon distance, even a half-day wander offers health benefits and discovery. Here are some of the best routes across the capital.
Wandle Trail: A Scenic Riverside Stroll
The Wandle Trail stretches 12.5 miles from Waddon in Croydon to the Thames at Wandsworth. It follows the River Wandle through parks and historic sites, including Morden Hall Park (a National Trust property with ornamental gardens) and Merton Abbey Mills, a former textile factory now housing independent shops and markets. The trail ends near The Ship pub in Wandsworth, perfect for a post-walk drink.
Victoria Line Challenge: Walk the Tube Above Ground
A viral TikTok trend, the Victoria Line challenge involves walking the entire route above ground, stopping at every station. The 11-mile walk takes about 4 hours 23 minutes (AllTrails) and is considered moderately challenging. TikTok user @issyraeeverett completed it, stopping at a funfair, food market, and for tea outside Buckingham Palace. She said: 'My body is broken, but this was good fun.' For a longer challenge, @captain.m walked the Metropolitan Line from Amersham to Aldgate (30 miles, 14 hours).
Epping Forest Main Path and Green Ride Circular
This 8.4-mile loop near Chingford Green takes under 3.5 hours and is moderately challenging. It winds through Epping Forest, one of London's largest ancient woodlands, offering forest paths and open spaces.
Wandsworth Bridge, Putney and Barnes Circular
This 5-6 mile flat route follows the River Thames from Wandsworth Bridge through Putney and Barnes, offering riverside views and wildlife. Barnes has a quaint high street with independent shops, cafes, and pubs. For a longer walk, extend via Richmond Park.
Little Venice to Camden Canal Walk
Starting at Little Venice, walkers follow the Regent's Canal Towpath east for about 2 miles to Camden. The route passes colourful narrowboats and waterside views. At Camden, reward yourself with a pint at the Hawley Arms.
Green Spaces Walk: West Dulwich to King's Cross
This Reddit-mapped route weaves through Clapham, Battersea, and Camden, hitting Battersea Park, Hyde Park, and Regent's Park. It takes about 4 hours, with optional picnic stops. Don't miss Paul Rothe & Son, a family-run sandwich shop in Marylebone that's been open for 100 years.
Tips for Completing a Mega Walk
Metro's Sarah Hooper, an avid walker who has completed 50km charity walks, advises: 'I treat long distance walks more like a hike — be prepared.' Pack sweets (e.g., sour strawberry laces for energy), plenty of water, suncream (even on cloudy days), and wear comfortable shoes.
Official TfL Walks
Transport for London's Walk London Network offers eight structured routes, including the Capital Ring (78 miles, 15 sections), Jubilee Greenway (60km, linking Olympic venues), and Thames Path (40 miles from Hampton Court Palace to central London). All are accessible by public transport.
