Tumble dryers are invaluable during colder months when washing accumulates rapidly, yet drying bedding in them can present quite a challenge. Large items such as bedsheets, duvet covers and blankets have a tendency to twist and tangle during the drying cycle. When this happens, they form tight balls that trap moisture within the fabric and block hot air from circulating properly throughout the fabric.
As a result, bedding remains damp at the cycle's end, forcing another load to be run - adding both time and expense to laundry costs. However, experts from appliance manufacturer Whirlpool have revealed a clever trick for drying bed linen more efficiently that requires nothing more than a simple bathroom towel.
How a towel prevents tangling
According to one specialist, "Adding a dry, clean towel to the dryer along with your sheets can help prevent tangling."
"It works by creating additional space and increasing airflow. The towel can be effective as it absorbs moisture and helps separate the sheets during the tumbling process."
The secret lies in the towels' construction - their looped, textured fabric provides exceptional absorbency and substantial surface area. This allows them to draw moisture away from bedding, accelerating drying time while simultaneously moving between sheets to prevent them from bunching together.
Using the technique at home
Incorporating a towel helps bed sheets and other bedding dry more efficiently, so the tumble dryer won't need to run for extended periods, and there is no need to purchase additional laundry products.
Simply load freshly washed bed sheets into the tumble dryer as usual, taking care not to overfill the drum. Then, pop a dry and clean towel alongside them and select a medium heat setting for the cycle.
When the tumble dryer has completed its cycle, remove the bedding from the machine and give everything a thorough shake before folding. Bed sheets ought to be fully dried without any tangling, making it straightforward to power through the laundry pile as the temperature drops.
