Sainsbury's AI SmartLists aims to 'take the effort' out of shopping

Sainsbury's has launched a new AI-powered tool designed to "take the effort" out of shopping. The supermarket chain says it hopes the feature will make the whole experience "joyful, simple and easy to fit in" around busy lives.

The new tool, called SmartLists, was launched on the Sainsbury's app on Wednesday. It lets customers create shopping lists by either typing in meal ideas or taking a photo of an existing written shopping list.

How SmartLists works

Once a list is created, the feature matches it to items available in the store, allowing customers to explore their options and find the best value for money. Selected items can then be added straight to the trolley for online orders.

The AI-powered feature has been created to save customers time when completing their weekly shop.

Part of a wider app redesign

SmartLists is part of a larger redesign of the Sainsbury's app. After the upgrade, shoppers will be able to access their online grocery orders, SmartShop, ChopChop, SmartLists and Nectar Points all in one place on their smartphone.

Ben Edge, Director of Product at Sainsbury's, said the new AI-powered feature will help shoppers have an "easier" shopping experience. He said: "We know our customers are busy and want shopping to feel joyful, simple, and easy to fit around their lives. SmartLists is designed to take the effort out of creating and buying a shopping list, whether customers are speaking, typing or taking a picture of what they need."

He added: "Alongside this, by bringing more of our services together in one app, we are making it easier for customers to plan their shop, build their basket and find products in store, however and whenever they choose to shop with us."
