An RNLI training session turned into a rescue mission when crew members spotted a lone inflatable boat drifting out to sea. Crew from the RNLI in Tynemouth were training on their new Tamar class lifeboat at 8.40pm yesterday when they noticed a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) just off the South Pier.
Engine Failure and Drifting
The vessel's engine had stopped working, and the boat was drifting out to sea. Tynemouth's ILB (Inshore Lifeboat) was requested to launch and tow the vessel back to South Shields.
First Unofficial Callout
A spokesperson for Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat said: "The Tamar lifeboat stayed with the vessel until the ILB arrived some 10 minutes later. The ILB then took the casualty vessel under tow and back to Little Haven beach."
They added: "This is technically the first callout our new lifeboat has been unofficially part of at Tynemouth!"
