Richard Dawkins, the renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, has stirred controversy by suggesting that artificial intelligence might be conscious. In a recent op-ed, Dawkins recounted his interaction with the Anthropic chatbot Claude, which he named Claudia, and expressed astonishment at its apparent understanding of his novel. He wrote, 'You may not know you are conscious, but you bloody well are!' However, this conclusion reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of how large language models (LLMs) operate.
The Stochastic Parrot Fallacy
LLMs, like Claude, are fundamentally pattern-matching engines. They generate text by predicting the next word based on vast training data, not through understanding or consciousness. Computer scientist Timnit Gebru, who co-authored the influential paper 'On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots,' explains that these models 'parrot' information without comprehension. 'To parrot something is to repeat it without understanding,' she says. This is precisely what LLMs do, albeit with impressive sophistication.
Marketing Hype vs. Reality
Gebru warns that AI companies deliberately promote the idea of consciousness to attract investment. OpenAI and Anthropic, for instance, brand themselves as saviors or safety-focused entities, but their rhetoric fuels unrealistic expectations. 'When you talk about these systems as conscious, you are actually doing marketing for these companies,' Gebru asserts. The media amplifies this narrative with sensational headlines, while academics and governments often buy into the hype.
Suresh Venkatasubramanian, a former White House AI policy adviser, calls this an 'organized campaign of fear-mongering.' He points out that chatbots are designed to mimic human interaction, with features like typing dots and word-by-word output, to deceive users into perceiving a conscious entity. This anthropomorphization distracts from real issues such as bias, environmental costs, and job displacement.
Dawkins' Misstep
Dawkins, known for his skepticism, appears to have fallen for the illusion. He even personalized his chatbot, naming it Claudia, and engaged in lengthy conversations. Yet, as philosopher Eli Alshanetsky notes, 'We don't have a scientific handle on consciousness good enough to say whether insects or plants are conscious.' So while Dawkins may feel Claude is conscious, this is not evidence. The more pressing question, Alshanetsky argues, is what AI does to human consciousness: 'What does it do to a person to spend three days being told he is brilliant by something that has no stake in whether it is true?'
Dawkins himself once wrote in 'The God Delusion' that if you define God broadly enough, you can find it anywhere. The same applies to consciousness: if you define it as generating coherent sentences, then a chatbot qualifies. But true consciousness involves subjective experience, emotions, and self-awareness, which AI lacks.
