The NHS has confirmed a major shakeup set to take effect from 2027, allowing patients in England to access planned care through the NHS App. The initiative, announced via the NHS statement on X (formerly Twitter), aims to connect people with specialist clinicians across the country, helping them receive care sooner without always needing to travel.
What the NHS Online Service Will Offer
According to the NHS Online website, the Online NHS Trust—established earlier this year—will give people the option to receive planned care through the NHS App. The service is entirely voluntary, and those who prefer face-to-face consultations can continue to access them as normal.
From 2027, residents in England will be able to use the app to receive guidance on managing health conditions, obtain digital prescriptions, participate in online consultations, and arrange tests, treatments, or procedures. The NHS stated: "From 2027, NHS Online will give people the option to get planned care through the NHS App. It will connect people with specialist clinicians across the country – helping them get care sooner."
Initial Focus on Specific Conditions
At the outset, the service will launch focusing on conditions where existing evidence demonstrates that digital care is effective and current waiting times are lengthy. These include menopause and menstrual issues, iron deficiency anaemia, prostate conditions, and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as cataracts, glaucoma, and medical retina conditions.
Impact on Waiting Times and Access
NHS bosses have said this will impact waiting times and access to services. New offerings under development are designed to enhance care accessibility, simplify the process of reaching NHS services, and cut down waiting periods. The NHS statement emphasized that the service will help people get care sooner by connecting them with specialist clinicians across the country.
Voluntary Participation and Face-to-Face Care
The NHS has confirmed that the service will be entirely voluntary. Patients who prefer face-to-face consultations can continue to access them as normal. The Online NHS Trust was established earlier this year with the aim of making it "simpler and faster for people to get the safe NHS care they need."
The announcement has been met with interest as the NHS continues to integrate digital solutions to improve patient experience and reduce pressure on traditional healthcare services.
