Indian Medical Student's AI MAGA Influencer Deceived 'Super Dumb' Audience for Profit
A 22-year-old medical student from northern India, identified only as Sam, has revealed he created an AI-generated conservative influencer to exploit the MAGA movement, claiming the crowd was "super dumb" and easy to fool. According to a report by Wired, Sam operated pro-MAGA social media accounts featuring Emily Hart, a fabricated AI woman, generating thousands of dollars monthly while studying.
How the AI Scam Unfolded on Social Media Platforms
Sam told Wired he launched the accounts to earn extra cash, posting content on immigration and abortion to attract followers. "The MAGA crowd is made up of dumb people—like, super dumb people. And they fall for it," he stated. The Instagram and Facebook pages for Emily Hart have since been taken down after being flagged for fraudulent activity in February.
Previously reviewed posts included provocative messages such as, "Trump should tell all the illegals that he will give them citizenship if they vote Republican and see how fast Democrats want them out of the country," and "If you want a reason to unfollow: Christ is king, abortion is murder, and all illegals must be deported."
Meta's Response and AI Content Policies
Meta, which operates Instagram and Facebook, has implemented measures to identify and label AI-generated content to promote transparency. In a February statement, the company noted it displays an 'AI info' label for detected AI content and requires disclosure for photorealistic videos or audio, with penalties for non-compliance. This action led to the banning of Emily Hart's Instagram page.
Gemini AI's Role in Crafting the Influencer Niche
Sam used Google's Gemini AI platform to develop the concept, initially aiming to sell AI-generated images of a woman in a bikini. Gemini advised him that creating a generic "hot girl" would face stiff competition and suggested targeting the "MAGA/conservative niche," noting that conservative audiences, particularly older men in the US, often have higher disposable income and loyalty.
A Google spokesperson clarified to The Independent that Gemini is designed to provide a range of viewpoints without conveying specific beliefs, responding appropriately to queries about reaching audiences with particular political beliefs.
Monetization and Lack of Regret from the Creator
Beyond social media, Sam sold MAGA apparel and subscriptions on Fanvue, an AI monetization platform similar to OnlyFans. He expressed no regret, stating, "I was spending maybe 30 to 50 minutes of my day, and I was making good money for a medical student. In India, even in professional jobs, you can't make this amount of money. I haven’t seen any easier way to make money online." He denied feeling like he was scamming people, despite the deceptive nature of the operation.
