iOS 27 Public Beta: Install on Your iPhone Today

Apple has released the public beta of iOS 27, allowing iPhone users to test the upcoming software update months before its official autumn launch. The beta is available through Apple's Beta Software Program and can be installed on compatible iPhones.

How to Install the iOS 27 Public Beta

To install the beta, first sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program at beta.apple.com. Once enrolled, open Settings on your iPhone, go to General > Software Update > Beta Updates, then select iOS 27 Public Beta to begin downloading and installing the update.

Apple uses public betas to identify bugs and performance issues before the final release. However, beta software may contain glitches, app compatibility problems, or reduced performance. Users should back up their iPhone to iCloud or a Mac before installing, as reverting to a previous iOS version requires erasing the device and restoring from a backup.

What's New in iOS 27?

One of the headline features is a major overhaul of Siri. Apple's voice assistant now better understands natural conversations, handles more complex requests, and can perform tasks like organizing calendars, creating reminders, assisting with travel planning, and quickly finding information across the device. For example, users can ask, "What flight is Mum on today?" or "What time do I need to leave to get to Bristol?" and Siri provides detailed, contextual answers.

Another standout addition is Visual Intelligence, built directly into the Camera app. Point your iPhone at an object to receive relevant information instantly. You can scan a restaurant bill to split the cost or point the camera at a meal to view nutritional information.

Performance and Customization

Apple promises a noticeable performance boost, especially for older devices. According to the company, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models will see the biggest improvements, with apps launching up to 30% faster, photos loading more quickly in the library, and AirDrop transfers reaching speeds up to 80% faster.

Users who disliked last year's Liquid Glass interface will appreciate a new transparency slider, allowing them to adjust the look from crystal clear to more deeply tinted. Other updates include refreshed app icons, expanded photo-editing tools like Spatial Reframing (which lets users reposition subjects in a photo after capture), and improved connectivity that switches more seamlessly between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

AirPods and Compatibility

AirPods owners get new personalization options with a Custom EQ feature that allows fine-tuning of bass, mid-range, and treble levels.

iOS 27 is compatible with the following iPhone models: iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).
