New GTA 6 screenshots have ignited a fierce debate among fans, with some claiming the graphics have been downgraded compared to earlier trailers, while experts argue the visuals show 'unprecedented polish.' The screenshots, released alongside pre-order details and the £90 Ultimate Edition, showcase protagonist customization and varied environments.
Fan Reactions and Downgrade Claims
On social media and Reddit, fans have scrutinized the screenshots, pointing to differences in lighting and character models. One Reddit thread claimed 'Rockstar completely butchered the lighting model since Trailer 2,' citing muddy occlusion shadows under car chassis. Another comparison of Jason's house alleged that 'highly detailed light and shadow bounce have almost been completely cut,' making the graphics resemble GTA Online.
However, Digital Foundry, a respected technical analysis outlet, praised the screenshots for their 'unprecedented level of polish,' particularly the ray traced reflections. They questioned which platform—PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X—the screenshots were captured on, suggesting Rockstar may have used a development environment 'where the framing, character positions, and lighting could orchestrate a perfect shot – irrespective of frame rate – with all settings dialled up to 11.'
Context and Comparisons
The controversy echoes past incidents like 'Puddlegate' for Insomniac's Spider-Man, where fans claimed puddles looked worse in the final game. Similarly, Spider-Man 2 faced water texture complaints but became the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive. Analysts note that such discourse rarely impacts game hype. Rockstar previously stated that Trailer 2 footage ran on a base PlayStation 5 and 'comprised of equal parts gameplay and cut scenes,' but no new gameplay footage has been shown.
Despite the debate, pre-orders for GTA 6 remain strong, and no substantial impact on anticipation is expected. Rockstar has not announced a new trailer, leaving gameplay details like driving and combat to fan speculation.
