Apple's first foldable iPhone could be revealed soon – tech critic reveals what to expect
Apple's first foldable iPhone could be revealed soon, says critic

Apple's September event is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first-ever foldable iPhone, alongside two new Apple Watch models. The keynote is likely to take place at 6 pm UK time on Wednesday 9 September at Apple's HQ in California, in the 1,000-seater Steve Jobs Theatre.

What to expect from the foldable iPhone

The foldable iPhone, possibly called the iPhone Ultra, is expected to be similar in size to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, roughly the shape and size of a passport when folded shut. When open, it will resemble a smaller version of the iPad mini, with narrow bezels around a screen measuring up to 7.8 inches on the diagonal. Apple is expected to enhance software so apps reformat intelligently to the larger screen. There are likely to be two cameras on board, not three, and the price is rumoured to be high due to memory chip storage and production challenges.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max updates

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max may look similar to current models, but a new processor will bring advanced Apple Intelligence features with an all-new Siri experience. Improvements to the three-camera system are also likely. The regular iPhone 18 is not expected to launch in September, marking the first time since 2010 that a base iPhone hasn't launched in autumn. It is expected to arrive in spring 2027, along with the sequel to the iPhone Air and the more affordable iPhone 18e.

Apple Watch and price increases

New Apple Watches, likely named Series 12 and Ultra 4, are expected to look similar to current models but with more powerful processors bringing advanced AI capabilities. Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned that prices are going up, with increases already applied to iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Since iPhone and Apple Watch prices have remained stable, September could bring price increases. Tim Cook hands over to John Ternus on 1 September, who will take charge of the keynote.
