World Cup 2026 Strike Averted at SoFi Stadium Before Opener

World Cup 2026 organisers have narrowly avoided a damaging strike at SoFi Stadium just days before the tournament begins. The union representing over 2,000 workers, UNITE HERE Local 11, had secured authorisation for strike action last week after multiple bargaining sessions with stadium operators Legends Global failed to reach an agreement.

Last-Minute Agreement Reached

According to The Athletic, a last-gasp deal has been struck between the two parties. The agreement includes a 40 per cent pay increase for workers in food and beverage concessions, including cooks, dishwashers, servers, and bartenders. Workers also secured the right to walk out if they believe the presence of federal agents, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), creates a reasonable apprehension of harm to their safety.

Additional elements of the deal include premium pay for mega-events like World Cup games and assurances that accreditation processes will be less invasive than those pursued by FIFA. The agreement is subject to ratification by workers on Wednesday.
