For first-time visitors to Wimbledon, the All England Club enforces a strict code of conduct that separates seasoned attendees from newcomers. From banned items to silence during play, knowing the rules ensures a smooth experience at the world's most prestigious tennis tournament.
What You Can Bring
Attendees are permitted to bring their own food and limited alcohol. Each person may bring one bottle of wine or champagne, or two cans of beer. Drinking at your seat is allowed, but opening a bottle or can during a point is strictly prohibited.
Banned Items
Prohibited items include large bags, hard-sided containers, camping chairs, professional recording equipment, flasks over 500 millilitres, and metal bottles. Weapons, drugs, and any flags, banners, or T-shirts with offensive content are also banned.
Dress Code
There is no formal dress code, but comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended. On hot days, a hat and sunscreen are advisable to prevent sunburn.
Court Etiquette
For show courts, seats are reserved for the entire day, allowing visitors to leave for refreshments without losing their spot. However, entry and exit are only permitted during changeovers, which last 90 seconds. On outside courts, seating is unreserved; leaving a seat means it will likely be taken quickly.
Absolute silence must be maintained during points and when a player is preparing to serve. Breaking this rule risks ejection by stewards and harsh judgment from fellow spectators. Avoid rustling crisp packets, checking phones, or opening cans during play.
Queue Rules
For those without tickets, the Queue opens the day before play. Visitors head to Wimbledon Park, find the back of the line, and obtain a Queue Card marking their position. Arriving by mid-afternoon and camping overnight increases chances of a show court ticket the next day, but nothing is guaranteed. Leaving for a hotel disqualifies attendees. For a Ground Pass (access to all courts except Centre, One, and Two), arriving before 7am on the day of play is recommended.
Following all steward instructions, treating others with respect, and using common sense are essential for an enjoyable Wimbledon experience.
