Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, and Jannik Sinner are all set to return to Centre Court on day seven of Wimbledon, each vying for a place in the quarter-finals of the grass-court Grand Slam. The star-studded lineup on Sunday, July 5, promises high-stakes tennis as the second week begins.
Centre Court Marquee Matches
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic continues his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, which would be his ninth at the All England Club. He faces Roman Safiullin, who surprised Joao Fonseca in the previous round. Djokovic enters as a heavy favourite.
Following Djokovic, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka takes on 14th seed Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion. This marks their fourth career meeting and first on grass. Sabalenka won their most recent encounter in straight sets at the French Open last month.
The final Centre Court match features defending champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner against Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, who upset Rafael Jodar in the last round. Both Djokovic and Sinner are expected to advance, but their opponents will look to rally the British crowd for support.
Sabalenka's Quest for Wimbledon Glory
Aryna Sabalenka has established herself as the premier women's player, winning four Grand Slams since 2023—two Australian Opens and two US Opens. She was also a runner-up at the French Open last year. However, she has never progressed beyond the semi-finals at Wimbledon, losing at that stage three times to Karolina Pliskova, Ons Jabeur, and Amanda Anisimova. Notably, none of those players went on to win the final.
To reach the final this year, Sabalenka must first overcome Naomi Osaka, then potentially face 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the fourth round, followed by either fourth seed Jessica Pegula or seventh seed Coco Gauff in the semi-finals—a challenging path.
Felix Auger-Aliassime's Breakthrough?
Felix Auger-Aliassime, now 25, debuted on the ATP tour at age 18 in 2019 and has since won nine titles. Despite his success, he has never advanced past the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. At Wimbledon, his best result is the quarter-finals, and he has exited in the first round in three of the last four years.
This year, seeded third, Auger-Aliassime has yet to drop a set. His victory over Michael Zheng marked his first-ever match on Centre Court. After the win, he said: "Feels great. First time in Centre Court. First time in main media room. It was a great night. Start of the second week, it only gets tougher from here." He next faces recent Mallorca champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, with a potential quarter-final against Djokovic—a rematch of their last meeting in 2022.
