A father-daughter duo faced their fear of heights together and conquered one of the UK's most terrifying landmarks, creating an unforgettable bonding experience at Zip World in Penrhyn Quarry, North Wales.
A Thrilling Family Day Out
Emily Malia and her family drove three hours to North Wales to experience what she calls one of the UK's most underrated attractions. Nestled in a historic slate quarry, the site features a 1,200-foot drop and is home to the world's fastest zipline, Velocity.
Emily surprised her dad with the trip, and both were nervous but excited. The staff at Zip World were informative, helpful, and calm, easing their anxiety throughout the day.
The Experience
After a briefing and private weighing, participants are fitted with helmets, goggles, and a full harness. A smaller practice zipline helps prepare for the main event, building adrenaline and confidence.
The journey through the quarry offers stunning views of bright blue water and endless piles of old slate, even on a foggy day. At the top, participants lie face down on mats and are hoisted into the air—an uncomfortable but safe position.
Emily described the descent as the closest she's felt to flying, reaching speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. The moisture in the air pelted her skin as she screamed with excitement. She wishes she could have done it more than once.
Additional Options
For an extra £20, visitors can have their descent filmed, providing a hilarious memento. After the adventure, the family stopped in Colwyn Bay for classic pub grub, recommending it as a base for a weekend trip with its pubs, shops, and clean coastline.
