The second day of the Southport Air Show drew huge crowds to the seaside town on August 30, but the Red Arrows display was cut short after only two minutes due to weather conditions deemed "unsafe" for the team to continue.
Red Arrows display halted
The much-loved seaside event, which takes over Southport across the August Bank Holiday weekend, entered its second and final day with hundreds turning out. The day kicked off with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, followed by several hours of incredible displays.
The Red Arrows returned to the air show after taking part the previous day, showing off their speed and precision to the delight of attendees. However, their display was halted as an announcement told attendees it was "unsafe" for the Red Arrows to continue due to the weather. Conditions had started off dry but it was raining heavily as the Red Arrows display started.
Further cancellations and final display
Two more of the day's displays were also cancelled: the 1.19pm Tutor display and the 2.57pm Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers. The Southport Air Show page said weather conditions were being continually monitored and any decisions regarding the flying programme would be made with safety in mind.
The event came to a close with the RAF Typhoon. The ECHO attended the event, where attendees could be seen enjoying the displays and on-ground entertainment despite the rain.
