Ospreys Get 50-Year Lease at St Helen's After £5.1m Upgrade

Swansea Council has committed £5.1 million to the redevelopment of St Helen's sports ground, securing a 50-year lease for regional rugby side the Ospreys. The decision, subject to a subsidy control assessment, was made by cabinet on June 11.

Redevelopment Plans

The council's investment will transform St Helen's into a modern sports facility for wider rugby use, including a permanent home for the Ospreys. The team played at Bridgend's Brewery Field last season after leaving the Swansea.com Stadium in Landore. The Ospreys will contribute an estimated £2.5 million to the project and cover additional temporary matchday facilities like big screens.

The existing playing surface is being replaced with an all-weather pitch, alongside new stands and a fan zone, aiming for the Ospreys to play their first home match this autumn.

Political and Rugby Context

Council leader Rob Stewart emphasized the authority's efforts to secure the club's future within Welsh professional rugby, challenging the WRU's plans to reduce teams from four to three. Uncertainty delayed the project, but the Ospreys' professional rugby agreement with the WRU until the 2027-28 season provided confidence to proceed.

“With the new rugby season beginning in October 2026, it is critical that a decision is made on how we now proceed,” a cabinet report stated. Stewart noted a “continued threat” until the WRU clarifies its long-term proposals.

Community and Cricket Impact

The redeveloped ground will serve community, university, and youth rugby under a new board. Swansea RFC will return to St Helen's after a temporary move to Dunvant rugby club. Joint deputy leader Cllr Andrea Williams highlighted benefits for future generations of male and female players.

The seafront venue has hosted international rugby and cricket. Glamorgan played county matches there until 2019, and Swansea cricket club's final game was in August 2024. The lease involves the clubhouse freehold transferring to the council, with the Ospreys paying rent.

After approving the investment and lease, cabinet moved to a private session to discuss further aspects.
