Newport's brand new leisure centre is to be called Splash, it has been announced. It will have two pools and a lazy river when it officially opens to the public.
The new centre is expected to be among the UK's first net zero facility of its kind, powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources.
Council's vision for Splash
Newport City Council's cabinet member for communities and sport, Mark Spencer, shared the council's vision behind the project. He said: “The name reflects what the centre will offer, its location and that it will make a huge splash with residents and visitors after it opens.
“Splash will have not one but two pools. A leisure and fun one with play equipment for children and a lazy river that will appeal to all ages and a second pool for public swimming, lessons and exercise sessions.
“In a prime waterfront location near the River Usk in the heart of the city, it will also have a well-equipped gym, offer exercise classes and have a café.”
Newport Live's commitment
Newport Live’s chief executive, Steve Ward, added: “We are proud to be bringing Splash to life as a welcoming, vibrant centre for the whole city while also attracting visitors from the wider region.
“Drawing on Newport Live’s experience of delivering inclusive sport, leisure and wellbeing opportunities, we will help people of all ages and abilities enjoy being active. Whether that’s through swimming lessons, family fun splashing in the pools, gym sessions, exercise classes or simply to meet with friends in the café.”
Opening timeline and funding
Originally, a spring 2026 opening was planned, but now construction is expected to finish by the end of 2026, with the centre opening likely between late 2026 and early 2027.
More than 55% of the costs are being met by external funding including the Welsh government’s transforming towns programme and funding from the UK Government.
