Manchester United have confirmed that left-back Tyrell Malacia will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month. The decision leaves a gap in the squad, with only Luke Shaw as a regular left-back option.
Malacia's Departure
Malacia played just 15 minutes of Premier League football last season but was on the bench on 28 occasions in the top flight as back-up to Shaw. He has had to fight back from a serious knee injury during his time at United and is now desperate to go and play first-team football elsewhere to rebuild his career.
Current Left-Back Options
Shaw started every Premier League game last term but has had fitness issues of his own in recent seasons. The 30-year-old has one year left on his contract, and a decision over an extension will be made at some point next season. However, there is concern about his ability to play two games a week.
United have Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui who can play at left-back, but Dorgu has started to impress on the wing, and Mazraoui is a right-back by trade.
Summer Transfer Plans
The club plan to sign a left-back this summer, but two of their early options now look to be off the table. Nathaniel Brown is set to join Bayern Munich, and Myles Lewis-Skelly has established himself in Arsenal's midfield. That leaves Lewis Hall as the leading candidate at the moment, with Newcastle United's left-back on United's radar. Hall was left out for Newcastle's final game of the season for Dan Burn, and despite some impressive displays, he did not make the cut for England's World Cup squad.
