Manchester City have officially appointed Enzo Maresca as their new manager, signing the Italian on a three-year contract to replace Pep Guardiola after the Catalan ended his 10-year reign at the Etihad. The announcement comes weeks after Guardiola departed following a triumphant final season that saw City clinch the Premier League title.
Maresca's Patient Wait Pays Off
The 46-year-old Italian had been out of work since leaving Chelsea in January but deliberately avoided other job offers to wait for the opportunity to succeed Guardiola. City’s CEO Ferran Soriano revealed that Maresca was the "standout candidate" from the start, praising his vision and character. The club had to negotiate a compensation package with Chelsea, reportedly an eight-figure sum, to finalise the appointment after Maresca's messy exit from Stamford Bridge.
Familiar Face Returns to City
Maresca is no stranger to the City Football Group, having previously managed the club's Under-21s in the 2020/21 season and served as Guardiola's assistant during the historic Treble-winning 2022/23 campaign. He later managed Leicester City to Championship promotion and won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea. His inside knowledge of City's structure and playing philosophy was a key factor in his selection.
"Enzo was the standout candidate in our considerations. We know his personality and his vision for the way football should be played. He is a man with integrity, charisma and passion. In addition to his successes at Chelsea and Leicester, his City track record speaks for itself," Soriano said. "He managed our EDS team with distinction and was a key contributor to the historic Treble season. We will ensure that he receives everything he needs to be successful here."
Maresca's Vision for City
Speaking on his appointment, Maresca expressed his enthusiasm: "Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me. City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively."
He added: "This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations. The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability. I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City."
Pre-Season Plans and Staff Changes
City will embark on a pre-season tour of Asia, with matches scheduled in Hong Kong and South Korea, before facing Arsenal in the Community Shield in Cardiff. Maresca will take a young squad due to 17 senior players being away at the World Cup representing their countries. The new manager is expected to bring in his own backroom staff after most of Guardiola's assistants departed, with James French the only existing staff member remaining.
