Former Aston Villa midfielder Ewan Simpson has joined Scottish League One side Airdrieonians, reuniting with manager John Rankin for the third time in his career.
Simpson's Return to Rankin's Side
The 19-year-old, who previously played for Aston Villa and Hamilton Academical, is no stranger to Diamonds boss John Rankin. Simpson worked under Rankin during a loan spell at Hamilton Accies last season and also benefited from his guidance as a youth player at Hearts.
Now, the pair have been reunited at Airdrie for the upcoming League One campaign. Simpson expressed his excitement about the move, stating: "Hopefully I can bring a lot to the team in terms of my technical ability and passing. I've known Ranks for years now – great person, I love him. Obviously when he phoned me up I felt like it was a no-brainer. To play under him again is always a pleasure."
He also acknowledged the challenges of League One: "League 1 is very hard. I thought it was a good challenge for me, something different, very physical. I really enjoyed it, and I can't wait to play in the league again."
Rankin's Praise for Simpson
Manager John Rankin spoke highly of Simpson, saying: "I first worked with Simmy when he was 14 years of age and have seen him develop into a man. He's got a great passing range and a real love of football, which saw him get a well-earned move to Aston Villa. This will be the third time I've worked with him, and I'm sure he will flourish here at Airdrie."
Simpson becomes Rankin's third summer signing, following the arrivals of striker Matty Yates and defender Sam Fisher in recent weeks.
