DIY SOS stars clash as Nick Knowles breaks down in tears

Nick Knowles broke down in tears during Tuesday's episode of DIY SOS after a clash between builders over the demanding eight-day project. The team travelled to Preston to help married couple Nigel and Julie Flemen and their three children, Emily, Charlotte and Daniel.

In October 2022, when Daniel was 13, he developed symptoms initially mistaken for an ear infection and tonsilitis. Doctors soon discovered a tumour on his brain, and he was blue-lighted for emergency surgery. During the operation, Daniel suffered a severe stroke that left him with life-altering disabilities.

"Undoubtedly, that's what's caused a lot of the damage which he has today," Nigel tearfully said. Given the complexity of his needs, Daniel spent several years in hospital, with his devoted mum rarely leaving his side. For almost three years, Julie lived in temporary accommodation beside the hospital, while her husband and daughters remained at home almost 50 miles away.

Challenging build in Preston

The family's hopes rested on the team adapting their bungalow to accommodate Daniel's needs, enabling him to finally come home. However, upon inspecting the property, Nick quickly identified a number of concerning issues.

"For us to do this in eight days, we'd literally have to take the roof off and rebuild it in a day, or we wouldn't get it done. Nobody does that. Nobody's ever done that," he said. Ultimately, Nick chose to take on the job, despite recognising just how "ambitious" the challenge was.

It wasn't long before friction emerged amongst the builders as the workload intensified. Electrician Billy Byrne grew frustrated after his crew were unable to start work until the second day of the project.

Clash and emotional moment

"When do you think you might be done in the extension? This evening, or before this evening?" Nick asked, before a stressed Billy replied: "I haven't got a clue. You can push us and push us and push us, but it's not our fault that we couldn't get in there until today... I feel you're pressurising [me]. You've got to realise that people can only work to a certain speed and certain hours. That's all I'm saying, just think about it."

Nick soon found himself feeling "guilty" and began wondering whether he should have taken on such a demanding job. He said: "The message is coming through loud and clear that actually taking what we've done is beyond even our capabilities to get the thing done. I mean, all of the evidence says that I should have said no, other than your heart. And you shouldn't let your heart rule your head in business, should you?"

Eventually, it all became overwhelming for Nick as the project approached completion. Just 24 hours before the Flemen family's return, the presenter grew emotional, saying: "I genuinely don't know how to put into words how tough this has been and how amazing everyone has been."

Family reunited

Nick added: "How much doubt I had along the way, how much guilt I felt, and how amazing it is that these amazing people have pulled it off. [It's been] physically and emotionally draining." The presenter then found himself unable to hold back his feelings, prompting him to step away from the camera in tears.

The hardships ultimately proved worthwhile, as Daniel was subsequently reunited with his family at their property after three lengthy years. Emotions ran high as the youngster entered his room, which had been specially adapted to meet his requirements. DIY SOS is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
