Johnny Depp is in talks to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Producer confirms talks
Speaking with Deadline at D23 this weekend, Bruckheimer said: "We're talking to Johnny, we're working on the screenplay. Hopefully, we can get this done."
Depp last played the role in 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. After that, he wanted to be involved in the story planning of a sixth film send-off for his character.
Past controversy
However, a year later, his ex-wife, Amber Heard, wrote an Op-ed claiming she had been a victim of domestic abuse, which Depp has always strongly denied. As a result, Disney dropped the star from the franchise, and Warner Bros asked him to resign as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts movies.
Depp later won his US libel case against Heard. During the case, he said if Disney approached him with $300 million he'd still never work with them again on a Pirates movie.
Hollywood comeback
Depp has since been making his Hollywood return, with his turn as Ebenezer Scrooge out this November. He has also reprised Captain Jack Sparrow for charity, and Bruckheimer is a friend.
This statement is the most positive Bruckheimer has made on the matter, raising hopes that Captain Jack may set sail again.
