Woman killed in Leeds police chase after car hits pedestrian

A woman has died after being struck by a car that was fleeing police in Leeds city centre. The collision happened on Beckett Street at around 9.50am on Thursday, just two minutes after officers authorised a chase.

Police chase and collision

The incident began on Harehills Road when a black Vauxhall Corsa failed to stop for officers. Police authorised a pursuit, and the Corsa then collided with a pedestrian on Beckett Street. The driver did not stop at the scene.

The 36-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead in hospital. The vehicle was later found abandoned on Nippet Lane, with at least two people having left the scene.

Investigation and appeal

The vehicle has been seized and is being searched by forensics. The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team has launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward.

Due to prior police contact, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle before or after is asked to contact police via 101.
