Canadian Open organisers have come under fire after all singles play in Montreal was cancelled on Monday due to weather, leaving ticketholders unable to get refunds.
Two men's singles quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw were scheduled for Monday evening on Centre Court, featuring Luciano Darderi, Brandon Nakashima, Rafael Jodar, and Arthur Fils. However, rain and thunderstorms were forecast, forcing the postponement of both matches to a new day session on Tuesday.
Ticketholders were informed that their tickets would remain valid for the rescheduled session, but no refunds, exchanges, or credits would be issued. This sparked outrage among fans, especially those unable to attend the new weekday session.
Organisers' statement
In a statement shared on Monday, organisers wrote: “Due to weather conditions, session 18 (Monday, August 10) has been postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11, at 12:30 p.m. Today's tickets are valid for tomorrow – No exchanges, no credits, or refunds will be issued. Session 19, scheduled for Tuesday, August 11 at 4 p.m., will now begin at 6 p.m. with the presentation of two singles matches. An updated schedule will be shared shortly.”
The new Centre Court schedule for Tuesday starts at 12:30 p.m. local time with Darderi vs Nakashima, while Jodar vs Fils will take place not before 2 p.m. Monday evening ticket holders are able to attend this session.
Fan backlash
Some ticketholders voiced frustration on social media, with one user writing: “Hahahaha, the flight for those who can’t make it tomorrow—I’m screwed, don’t you have any shame?” Another added: “So if someone bought tickets for Monday but can’t attend on Tuesday you are just telling paying fans to F*** Off?”
Many pointed out that the rescheduled matches fall on a workday, making attendance difficult. “no refunds, but i cannot make it tomorrow as it’s a work day,” one fan wrote.
The night session on Tuesday begins at 6 p.m. with Jakub Mensik vs Ben Shelton, followed by Daniel Merida vs Learner Tien. Additionally, a doubles match between French duo Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti, who faced Fabian Marozsan and Daniil Medvedev, was suspended due to weather at the end of the first set, with the French pair leading 7-6(4).
