Why Canada Must Play South Africa in Los Angeles for World Cup Match
Canada Forced to Play South Africa in Los Angeles for World Cup

Canada will make history on Sunday as the first host nation in men's FIFA World Cup history to play a tournament match outside its own borders. The Canadian team faces South Africa in Los Angeles after finishing second in Group B.

Why Canada Cannot Play at Home

Canada needed a win or draw against Switzerland in their final group stage match on Wednesday to top Group B. However, a 2-1 loss dropped them to second place. Had they secured top spot, they would have remained in Vancouver for a round of 32 match at BC Place.

Because they finished second, the pre-set tournament bracket dictated their path. FIFA scheduled the Group B runner-up to face the Group A runner-up (South Africa) at Los Angeles Stadium. This match is the first round of 32 clash and kicks off at 5pm UK time on Sunday, June 28.
