More than 40 fish and chip takeaways across the UK have been named on the longlist for the National Fish and Chip Awards 2027, competing for top honours in the prestigious competition. The shortlisted establishments impressed judges with 'outstanding' scores across key criteria, including food quality, customer service, industry expertise, and commitment to sustainability.
Contenders from coast to countryside
With contenders spanning nearly every county—from coastal towns to rural villages and bustling cities—Britain shows a remarkable variety of quality chippies. Chosen from entries submitted across the UK, the longlist contenders have demonstrated excellence in their products, service, and their ability to represent fish and chip-loving communities throughout the nation.
Now in their 39th year, the awards celebrate culinary excellence across 14 categories, including the fiercely contested Restaurant of the Year title.
Previous winner's advice
Aman Dhesi, co-owner of The Scrap Box in York, Yorkshire, and current Takeaway of the Year titleholder, reflected on what his win meant to him last year. He said: "More than six months on from winning, we're still seeing the impact of the award. It gave the business a huge boost, as did reaching the top 10 the year before, but probably the biggest thing has been the opportunities it's opened up for us outside the shop, from media and travel to meeting people across the industry and getting involved in some really exciting projects."
He added: "For those in the top 40, I'd say enjoy the process and make the most of it. The awards journey really makes you look closely at your own business - what you do well, what makes you different and where you can still improve. We learned a huge amount through the process before we ever won. And don't try to second-guess what the judges want. Be proud of what makes your shop yours and tell that story."
The next stages
The next stage will narrow the number down to 20 in the semi-finals, before the top 10 is revealed for 2027.
The longlist includes shops from Bristol, Devon, Dorset, Essex, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, London, Merseyside, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Suffolk, Surrey, Yorkshire, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
