Geordie dialect is celebrated worldwide, often cited as one of the friendliest sounding regional accents in the UK. It is notoriously difficult to impersonate and instantly recognisable anywhere in the world.
Many of the most popular Geordie sayings, words and phrases have appeared on television over the years, from Auf Wiedersehen, Pet in the 1980s and Byker Grove in the 1990s to Hebburn, Vera and the recent fly-on-the-wall series Geordie Coppers, which has drawn significant attention in recent weeks.
Why this list has been compiled
Some Geordie words and phrases can be indecipherable to those who have never heard them. As Newcastle welcomes a new intake of students for the new academic year at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, an updated list of favourite sayings has been compiled from Chronicle readers and the team.
A general guide to Geordie pronouns, verbs and adverbs is included, as these appear in many examples and are commonly heard in the street or pub. These include: an' all (as well, generic expression of emphasis), dee (do), divvin' (don't), gan (go), doon (down), nee (no), neet (night), propa (very, really or significantly), purely (emphatically), owa (over) and us (me).
