Liverpool have experienced an unpredictable yet exciting beginning to the summer period. Andoni Iraola has taken over from Arne Slot, which means the Reds will undergo a transitional phase.
While the World Cup is dominating the news agenda as the group stage fixtures intensify, Liverpool have remained central to numerous transfer reports. One story saw 17-year-old prospect Rio Ngumoha connected with a surprise switch to Bayern Munich. Another involved former cult favourite Darwin Nunez being rumoured to be making an astonishing return to Anfield following his departure from the club last August. Today's Liverpool news reveals both prospective moves have taken a significant turn.
Rio Ngumoha Camp's Two Assurances to Bayern
Liverpool were shaken last weekend when the Bundesliga heavyweights were associated with a potential raid for talented winger Ngumoha. According to Bayern Insider, Ngumoha's agents provided two assurances to the German club. Firstly, it suggests that his camp "signalled that the winger would be interested in going to Bayern Munich". After that, the report alleges that the teenager's representatives indicated there "would be no issue in sorting out contract details and the salary".
Nevertheless, the report continued: "FC Bayern had a very clear signal when they knocked on the door at Liverpool that there would be no time or reason for talks," and therefore, no discussions occurred. The Reds' firm position was understood to derive from their confidence in Ngumoha's ability, believing he can develop and become a significant asset for the club.
Ngumoha impressed for England on his Three Lions debut against New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up last weekend, collecting the player of the match accolade. The teenager appears to be progressing from his first season with the Reds, during which he netted three times across 31 outings.
Darwin Nunez Twist
Despite being linked with a remarkable return to Liverpool, Nunez is reportedly being pursued by Barcelona. The Catalan side are understood to be seeking a cost-effective successor for Robert Lewandowski, who is departing the club this summer. According to Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old represents a more affordable option, having already committed £69m to securing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.
Nunez departed the Reds to join Al Hilal for £46m last year and began promisingly in the Saudi Pro League. Yet the club's acquisition of Karim Benzema pushed the striker down the pecking order and he was omitted from the squad for the second half of the campaign. Speculation intensified this week that the player himself was keen to engineer a return to Liverpool. Nevertheless, that appears unlikely.
Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen was similarly doubtful about suggestions of a comeback for the Uruguayan striker, who initially joined the Reds in July 2022 from Benfica for an initial £64m. "Nunez was effective for Liverpool, but if Andoni Iraola does believe he can be a good fit, then he is the one to make that call," he said. "He will know how he wants Liverpool to play and who can be effective and know how to play the role well. But for me, I don't see Nunez returning to Liverpool."
