Man Utd's Zirkzee Transfer to Roma in Doubt After Amorim Sacking
Zirkzee's Roma move in doubt after Man Utd manager change

The potential January transfer of Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee to AS Roma has been plunged into significant doubt, following the dramatic managerial change at Old Trafford this week.

Amorim Exit Changes the Game

Zirkzee, 24, had been strongly linked with a loan switch to the Italian capital after falling out of favour under former boss Ruben Amorim. However, the Portuguese manager's sacking has fundamentally altered the landscape for the Dutch forward. Roma's sporting director, Ricky Massara, has now publicly admitted that the situation regarding a deal has become more complicated.

"He is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us," Massara told Sky Sport Italia. "Naturally, the situation is different after this change of management. There are no contacts in progress."

Roma's Search for a Striker Continues

Massara confirmed that Roma are actively pursuing other attacking options, including Napoli's Giacomo Raspadori and a player from Atletico Madrid, whose deal is tied to the Spanish Supercup. The director emphasised the club's need to bolster their forward line in this window, stating they have "struggled to convert chances into goals."

This development offers Zirkzee a potential lifeline to revive his Manchester United career under a new manager. Signed from Bologna for £36.5 million in July 2024, his time at the club has been underwhelming, with just nine goals in 63 appearances. He still has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

Teammate Support and Future Fixtures

The striker has recently received public backing from teammate Matheus Cunha, who praised his quality following an assist in the draw with Leeds United. "We need him. He needs to understand this and then everyone can count on him," said the Brazilian.

With the Roma move now uncertain, Zirkzee may have immediate opportunities to impress at United. The club faces Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday, before an FA Cup tie against Brighton at the weekend. Everton have also been mentioned as a potential Premier League suitor should he seek a move away.
