Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid has not gone according to plan, with the former Liverpool defender struggling for fitness and form. Now, former England striker Teddy Sheringham has suggested a surprise return to the Premier League with Arsenal could revive his career.
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool last year aiming to become a mainstay at right-back for Real Madrid, but has faced competition from Dani Carvajal and was left out of Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad. His situation may worsen with the arrival of Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager.
Arsenal, meanwhile, could be in the market for a right-back after injuries to Ben White and Jurrien Timber. Sheringham believes Alexander-Arnold could thrive in an organised defensive unit like Arsenal's, despite his reputation for being defensively vulnerable.
“Liverpool fans might not want him back, so it does narrow down where he could go,” Sheringham told BOYLE Sports. “If you put Trent in an organised, structured back four, and they work as a unit, that's what playing in a team like Arsenal is all about.”
Alexander-Arnold has indicated he plans to stay at Real Madrid, posting on Instagram: “I promise we will bring trophies back to this amazing club next season!” However, with the club's summer business, his long-term future remains uncertain.
