Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the sale of highly-rated academy winger Tynan Thompson to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £8 million. The transfer includes an initial £4 million upfront with a further £4 million in performance-related add-ons. Thompson, an England Under-18s international, was named in Spurs' first-team matchday squad on three occasions last season and had signed his first professional contract in May 2025.
Details of the Transfer
Standard Sport understands that Tottenham have retained matching rights and a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Thompson expressed a desire to relocate due to personal family circumstances, which facilitated the move. The winger was one of the most highly-regarded talents in Spurs' academy, having scored 13 goals and provided six assists in all competitions for the club's youth teams last season. Notably, he netted seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League appearances.
Spurs' Summer Overhaul
Tottenham have been exceptionally active in the summer transfer window, spending over £200 million as manager Roberto De Zerbi reshapes the squad ahead of his first full season in charge. The club broke its transfer record twice in quick succession to sign midfielders Sandro Tonali for £100 million and Mateus Fernandes for £85 million. Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke joined from Brighton for £52 million, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka arrived on free transfers.
Outgoings have also been significant. Luka Vuskovic moved to Brighton for £50 million, Radu Dragusin joined Fiorentina on loan with an obligation to buy for around £21 million, and striker Alejo Veliz completed a permanent switch to Brazilian club Bahia. Yves Bissouma was among 11 players released at the end of their contracts, while loanees Randal Kolo Muani and Joao Palhinha returned to Juventus and Bayern Munich respectively.
Academy Exits Continue
Thompson is the latest academy product to leave Spurs this summer, following midfielder Alfie Devine's permanent £6 million move to Championship side Preston North End earlier in the month. Club sources indicate that Spurs are keen to maximize sales this summer, having struggled to command fair market value for their players in recent years.
Lucas Bergvall has also expressed a desire to leave the club, fearing a lack of playing time under De Zerbi next season. Spurs have rejected bids from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle for the Swedish midfielder, who returns for pre-season training this week with frustration.
