Cardiff City defender Jesper Daland could be at the centre of a January transfer battle, with three European clubs reportedly tracking the Norwegian ahead of a key Champions League audition against Aston Villa.
The 26-year-old is currently on loan at Norwegian side Viking FK, where his form has attracted interest from Schalke 04, Eintracht Frankfurt and French club Lille, according to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur. Scouts from all three clubs are said to have watched the centre-back in action for Viking last month.
Champions League Showcase
Daland has another chance to impress when Viking face Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Champions League this evening. The towering defender has already featured in Viking's opening two group-stage matches against Bayern Munich and Stuttgart, having also played during their qualifying campaign against GNK Dinamo.
The clash with Premier League opposition represents another significant opportunity for Daland to catch the eye of prospective suitors, particularly if he earns a starting spot.
Cardiff's Potential Windfall
According to Konur's report for fussball-news.de, interest in Daland remains at an early stage, with no concrete offers received at the time of publication. Schalke, Frankfurt and Lille are said to be gathering information before deciding whether to move in January.
Cardiff could secure a significant financial boost if that interest turns into a permanent transfer. The Bluebirds are reportedly prepared to sell Daland for between €3m and €4.5m, with the upper end equivalent to almost £3.8m.
That would represent a useful return for Cardiff, who signed the defender from Cercle Brugge in 2024 and have him under contract until the summer of 2028.
Loan and Squad Situation
Daland's loan with Viking runs until January, reflecting the different calendar of the Norwegian football season, potentially opening the door for discussions over a permanent move during the winter window.
The defender is understood to be surplus to requirements at Cardiff, where manager Brian Barry-Murphy already has Gabriel Osho, Will Fish, Krystian Bielik, Dylan Lawlor and Calum Chambers among his central defensive options.
With Daland unlikely to return to the first-team picture under Barry-Murphy, securing a permanent exit could make sense for all parties. Cardiff were left frustrated by the end to their summer window and are determined to put that right in the new year, with any substantial fee from a Daland sale providing additional funds to reinvest in the squad.
