Tottenham Hotspur's sporting director Johan Lange has publicly outlined the club's "big ambitions" for the upcoming summer transfer window, following what he describes as a "disciplined" approach during the January market.
A Measured January Despite Mounting Injuries
Despite facing a significant injury crisis that left them without eleven first-team players for Sunday's match against Manchester City, Spurs made just two senior signings during the winter window. The club secured midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and teenage Brazilian left-back Souza, while also adding Hearts prospect James Wilson on loan for the Under-21 squad.
Lange acknowledged the frustration surrounding the limited activity, particularly given the unexpected scale of injuries that emerged during January. "When we go into January, we didn't anticipate that we'll have seven injuries during the month," he explained in a club interview. "That of course changes things during the course of the window."
Resisting 'Stress Purchases' for Long-Term Strategy
The sporting director defended the club's restrained approach, emphasising the importance of avoiding what he termed "stress purchases." He argued that while immediate signings might provide temporary relief, they could prove counterproductive if the players don't align with the club's medium to long-term objectives.
"It's very important, even though that is highly frustrating with all the injuries, to remain disciplined," Lange stated. "If you then go in and make a stress purchase of any football players, then yes, the immediate feeling it gives you is nice, but there's no point in signing players that will not help us in the short term, in the medium term, or even in the long term."
Lange expressed confidence that most injured players would return this season, with some expected back imminently, reinforcing the decision to maintain strategic discipline rather than pursuing reactive signings.
Summer Window Promises Significant Activity
Looking ahead, Lange revealed that Tottenham are already planning for substantial summer business. "The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players move clubs," he noted. "We will go into the summer window with big ambitions of strengthening the team."
The club has reportedly begun detailed preparations, with Lange confirming: "The plans are already drawn up. We have a clear picture of which positions and also which profiles."
Current Challenges and Future Objectives
Tottenham's injury woes were highlighted by captain Cristian Romero's recent comments after playing through illness against Manchester City. Romero described the squad depth as "disgraceful," reflecting the strain on available players.
Despite these challenges, Tottenham secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 last week, where they will face either Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, or Galatasaray in March. However, their domestic form remains concerning, with the club sitting 14th in the Premier League, just nine points above the relegation zone.
Manager Thomas Frank continues to face scrutiny amid this poor league performance, adding another layer of pressure as the season progresses.
Focus on Immediate and Future Success
Lange emphasised the dual focus required at this stage of the season. "We are looking forward to the summer, now we focus on the rest of the season and that is very, very important as well because we have big objectives," he said.
He highlighted the club's ongoing Champions League campaign and desire to climb the Premier League table as immediate priorities, while simultaneously preparing for summer recruitment. "Myself and others will have our eyes already now directed towards the summer transfer window," Lange confirmed.
Tottenham's next challenge comes on Saturday 7 February with an away trip to in-form Manchester United, where they will seek their first league victory of the calendar year.
