John Souttar's move to Aris Thessaloniki could be off after the Greek Super League club blamed a late hitch in negotiations.
The 29-year-old Rangers defender was expected to seal a switch to Greece after being deemed surplus to requirements at Ibrox. Souttar only signed a new Gers deal in February but does not feature in Derek McInnes' plans.
After missing last week's transfer deadline, it looked like the Scotland international would have to stay until January. But with the Greek window open until September 15, Aris made a late swoop.
Aris blame financial issues
However, the move has now been plunged into serious doubt, with the Super League outfit blaming a late hitch in negotiations.
An Aris spokesman said: “While we had found everything, the footballer has financial issues with Rangers.
“After negotiations, they did not find an agreement in the end, so everything indicates that he will remain with the Scottish team.
“At the same time, a final effort is being made to overturn the facts.”
McInnes admits interest
Speaking earlier this week, Rangers boss McInnes admitted he expected the out-of-favour defender to move on.
He said: “I spoke to John this morning, he trained. There's a bit of interest in him from one or two clubs, one club maybe a bit further down the line than the other.
“But I think it's something that could develop but I don't think it's at that stage yet but maybe something will happen over the next two or three days.”
A final effort is now being made to overturn the facts, but everything indicates Souttar will remain with the Scottish team.
