Liverpool manager Arne Slot has strongly indicated the club may not be active in the January transfer market, despite ongoing links with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
Slot Content With Liverpool Squad
Ahead of a crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal, the Reds boss expressed his satisfaction with his current playing group. Slot stated he is "really happy" with the squad and pointed to the significant investments made during the previous summer window, which included the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak.
When directly questioned about the potential move for Guehi, Slot was unequivocal in his refusal to discuss targets. "I never talk about transfers in public, let alone talking about a transfer from another club," he said. "My answer is always the same. We don’t talk about players that are not ours."
He further emphasised the club's long-term planning, adding that all decisions are made in alignment with sporting director Richard Hughes and the ownership, suggesting a patient approach this month.
Palace Boss Sets Guehi Transfer Threshold
While Liverpool may be hesitating, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has publicly outlined the conditions under which his captain could be sold. Despite Guehi's contract expiring in the summer of 2026, making him a free agent, Glasner admitted the club would consider a sale if a "massive offer" meets their financial threshold.
"There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell]," Glasner explained. "If the player says: ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen."
He specifically named Manchester City as a serious suitor, revealing the Premier League champions' interest. This comes amid reports that City are also leading the race to sign Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, another player linked with Liverpool.
Background of the Failed Summer Move
The interest in Marc Guehi is not new for Liverpool. The clubs had previously agreed on a £35 million deal on transfer deadline day in September 2025, only for Palace to pull out at the final moment. The England international remains a player admired at Anfield, with the club among several, including Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, expected to approach him when his contract ends.
Liverpool's current defensive options are stretched, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the only fit senior centre-backs. Joe Gomez and Geovani Leoni are both sidelined through injury, highlighting a potential area of need that Slot appears willing to navigate with his existing resources for now.
The January window remains open, but for Liverpool, a major move for Guehi or any other player seems increasingly unlikely based on the manager's latest comments.
