Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon is poised to end his spell as a free agent with a high-profile move to Major League Soccer, where he is expected to link up with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
From Training Alone to Replacing a Legend
According to reports from Spanish publication Marca, a deal for the 28-year-old left-back to join the Florida-based club is effectively a 'done deal'. Reguilon has been without a club since his departure from Tottenham Hotspur in June and has reportedly been training extensively on his own to maintain fitness.
His anticipated role at Inter Miami will be to fill the void left by veteran Jordi Alba, who is set to retire after this weekend's MLS Cup final against Vancouver Whitecaps. Alba, a former Barcelona teammate of Messi, will bow out alongside fellow midfield icon Sergio Busquets.
A Career Seeking Stability
Reguilon's career has been one of frequent movement in recent years. A product of Real Madrid's academy, he made his name during a successful loan spell at Sevilla, which included winning the Europa League in 2020.
This earned him a permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur, but he struggled to hold down a regular spot, making just 73 appearances for the North London club. He was subsequently sent out on three separate loan spells:
- Atletico Madrid
- Manchester United
- Brentford
His time at Old Trafford was particularly brief, featuring for only 655 minutes under manager Erik ten Hag before the club opted to cut his loan short in early 2024.
Miami's New Era Begins
While an official announcement from Inter Miami is expected to wait until after Alba's farewell following the MLS Cup final on December 6, 2025, all signs point to Reguilon's exile soon being over.
For Inter Miami, the signing represents a strategic move to rejuvenate their defensive line as they prepare for life after two of their most experienced stars. For Reguilon, it offers a fresh start and the chance to play a key role in a project spearheaded by the legendary Lionel Messi.
The defender's last competitive action was a rare start for Spurs in a Premier League match against Aston Villa in May, one of just six appearances he managed in his final season in England.
