Ange Postecoglou has been appointed as the new head coach of Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, taking over a squad that includes superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The Australian manager, who previously led Celtic to Scottish Premiership titles and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, signed a three-year contract with the Riyadh-based club.
Postecoglou's New Challenge
The 59-year-old replaces Luis Castro, who was dismissed after Al-Nassr finished second in the Saudi Pro League last season, 14 points behind champions Al-Hilal. Postecoglou's primary task will be to end Al-Hilal's domestic dominance and mount a serious challenge for the AFC Champions League.
According to Al-Nassr's president, Musalli Al-Muammar, "Ange is a proven winner with a clear philosophy. We believe he is the right man to lead our team to new heights." Postecoglou's attacking style and man-management skills are expected to be key in integrating Ronaldo and other high-profile players.
Managing Cristiano Ronaldo
One of Postecoglou's biggest challenges will be managing the 39-year-old Ronaldo, who scored 44 goals in 45 appearances last season but has been linked with a move away. Postecoglou said, "I am excited to work with world-class players like Cristiano. His ambition matches mine, and I look forward to building a team that can compete for every trophy."
Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022, has two years left on his contract. The club hopes Postecoglou's appointment will convince the Portuguese star to stay and lead the project.
Postecoglou's Track Record
Postecoglou won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic, including a treble in the 2022-23 season. He also led the Australian national team to the 2015 Asian Cup title. His tenure at Tottenham was less successful, finishing fifth and eighth before being sacked in November 2024.
Al-Nassr's squad includes other stars like Sadio Mané, Aymeric Laporte, and Marcelo Brozović. The club has invested heavily in recent years, aiming to become a powerhouse in Asian football.
Immediate Objectives
Postecoglou's first competitive match will be the Saudi Super Cup in August. The club also begins its AFC Champions League campaign in September. Al-Nassr has not won the Saudi league since 2019 and last won the Asian Champions League in 1995.
"I know the expectations are high, but I embrace that pressure," Postecoglou said. "We will play attacking football and give everything for the badge."
