Newcastle sign Arsenal prospect Kyran Thompson

Newcastle United have completed the signing of highly-rated 16-year-old prospect Kyran Thompson from Arsenal, with the teenager taking to social media to confirm the move.

Thompson, who had been pursued by Arsenal to sign scholarship terms and was also linked with Tottenham Hotspur, has opted to join the Magpies instead. The news will be welcomed by Newcastle fans, especially given Arsenal's aggressive pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

Social media announcement

Thompson confirmed the transfer with an eye-catching video on Instagram, produced by his agency Truth Sports. The clip shows him arriving at the Magpies training ground, wearing the club's shirt, with cameras snapping pictures of him and his family. He is also seen shaking hands with backroom staff and visiting the academy set-up, with a dramatic smoke effect resembling a boxer's entrance.

In a short caption, Thompson wrote: "Grateful to sign for Newcastle United. Ready to get to work." He also posted a farewell to Arsenal, saying: "Thank you for everything."

Arsenal background

Thompson had impressed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with his performances for the youth teams, even training with the senior squad. He joined Arsenal from West Ham United two years ago and made his U21 debut in a draw against Southampton in November. Prior to that, he scored three goals and provided two assists in 27 U18 Premier League appearances. He also has four caps for England U17s, scoring in a 5-2 friendly win over the USA in November 2025.

It remains unclear what the immediate plan is for Thompson at Newcastle. The club is yet to officially announce Mathias Jaissle as their new head coach, despite agreeing a £9.5m compensation deal with Al-Ahli.
