Newcastle United could receive an unexpected transfer windfall on deadline day, with Liverpool weighing up a move for Yankuba Minteh. The Magpies are believed to be entitled to a 10% cut of any future transfer for the Brighton & Hove Albion winger after including a sell-on percentage when they sold him to the Seagulls in June 2024.
Potential £8m boost for Newcastle
Newcastle picked up a £30m fee for Minteh in that deal, but further funds could follow if Liverpool meet Brighton's £80m asking price. Talks over a transfer reopened over the weekend, and with the window entering its final hours before Tuesday's deadline, Newcastle could scoop a six-figure sum for the player they originally signed for £5.8m from OB Odense.
Minteh was sold, along with Elliot Anderson, in summer 2024 when Newcastle faced Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues and were threatened with a points deduction by the Premier League. He left Tyneside just hours before the league's financial health check deadline, with both sales impacting former boss Eddie Howe.
Sell-on clause a scant reward
The sell-on clause would be scant reward for what was deemed a devastating situation for Newcastle, especially given Anderson's rise to a £116m player and an established World Cup star, making the £35m earned from his sale look paltry. The £20m fee paid to sign goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest is also factored into the context.
Speaking about his move from Newcastle to Brighton in 2025, Minteh said: "I didn't know anything about that because I'd never heard of it - that thing, 'PFA' [PSR], or something like that. I just heard from my agent that they wanted to sell me. I said: 'OK, if they want to sell me, then it's fine. I can go to another club and try. I know other clubs are interested in me, so if I don't play there, then it's an opportunity to play for another team.' I wasn't sad or anything like that."
He added: "All I was doing in the Netherlands [with Feyenoord] was trying to show I could play in the Premier League, because that is all I want. It doesn't matter if it is Newcastle, Bournemouth or Brighton, but, after finding myself in Brighton, I have fallen in love with the club now. I am settled here and I am good here now. I don't have anything against Newcastle. This is how football works. You go to this team, you think you are going to stay there for the rest of your life. Another team wants you, you move to another team."
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will meet Brighton's £80m demand, but if a deal is completed, Newcastle would be due a 10% share of the transfer fee.
