Penthouse in former school tower on sale for £550,000

A three-bedroom penthouse in the tower of the former Mostyn House School in Parkgate, Neston, has been listed for sale at £550,000. The property, known as The Tower at Grenfell Park, overlooks the Dee Estuary and is marketed by estate agents Karl Tatler.

History of Mostyn House School

Mostyn House School opened in Parkgate in 1855 as a small all-boys school and expanded over its 155-year history into the grand black-and-white building seen today. According to The Parkgate Society, the original 18th-century building was formerly known as the Mostyn Arms and, before that, the George Inn, where stage coaches once departed for Chester. When its proprietor, Esther Briscoe, died in 1855, there was no more demand for a hotel in the area, and the building became a school.

Notable pupils included former Wirral MP Sir Gershom Stewart, philosopher James Ward, New Zealand aviator Leonard Isitt, and artist David Gerry Partridge. Another student was WWII soldier George Ward Gunn, who was killed in Libya in 1941 while firing on a fleet of 60 German tanks with a single unarmoured gun, an act for which he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

The conversion to Grenfell Park

Mostyn House School was owned and run by the Grenfell family from 1862 until its closure in 2010. Following this, it was converted into a block of flats known as Grenfell Park. Its vast size and striking black-and-white frontage make it the most prominent building on The Parade, with the large central tower being its most notable feature.

The penthouse includes a living room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, a bathroom and ensuite, and a mezzanine floor. The kitchen diner features fitted appliances, granite worktops, and ample storage, and leads onto an adjacent balcony with views over the grassy marshland extending towards the Dee Estuary.
