Manchester United are preparing for another significant spending spree, with manager Ruben Amorim making the acquisition of two new midfielders the club's absolute top priority for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Amorim's Midfield Rebuild
Despite heavy investment in the most recent summer window, which saw forwards like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko arrive at Old Trafford, the Red Devils are not finished rebuilding. Boss Ruben Amorim is now turning his attention to the centre of the park, viewing it as the key area for reinforcement.
The club's interest is focused on two primary targets: Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson. United's late interest in the 21-year-old Cameroonian, Baleba, was resisted by Brighton in the summer, but the club remains keen, and the player is also understood to be eager for a move to Manchester.
The Two Key Targets
Elliot Anderson has emerged as the number one target on United's shortlist. The 23-year-old England international's impressive performances for both club and country have attracted significant attention. Forest are aware they face a major battle to retain his services.
Anderson's versatility is a major draw for Amorim, as he can operate effectively as a traditional number six or in a more advanced, marauding midfield role. This flexibility makes him an exceptionally attractive prospect for the United boss.
Furthermore, the potential financial outlay for Anderson is seen as more manageable compared to Baleba, who is rated at around £100 million. This positions the Forest star as a potentially astute piece of business for the long-term rebuild.
Squad Reshuffle and Current Form
The need for midfield reinforcements is underscored by the situation of veteran Casemiro, whose contract is running down. It is reported that the Brazilian would have to accept a substantial pay cut if he were to extend his stay at the club.
United have also shown interest in Conor Gallagher, should he become available on loan from Atletico Madrid in January as he seeks to secure a place in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup.
This renewed focus on the midfield comes after a turbulent start to the season under Amorim. After their summer of big spending, United endured a woeful opening, finding themselves in 14th place in the Premier League at the end of September.
However, the team has since rallied impressively, going on a five-match unbeaten run to climb up the table. A late draw against Tottenham in their last outing has left them in seventh position as they prepare to host Everton at Old Trafford next weekend.
