Former Defender Urges Manchester United to Chase Cole Palmer
Wes Brown, the former Manchester United defender, has publicly advised his old club to make the signing of Chelsea forward Cole Palmer a top priority. This comes amid growing speculation linking the 23-year-old England international with a surprising transfer to Old Trafford.
Palmer's Rise and Recent Struggles at Chelsea
Since his move from Manchester City in 2023, Cole Palmer has established himself as a talismanic figure at Stamford Bridge. His debut campaign was nothing short of spectacular, netting 27 goals across all competitions, earning numerous individual accolades, and securing a regular spot in the England national team.
However, the current season has presented challenges. Following a 15-goal Premier League campaign last year, Palmer's form has dipped somewhat. He has been hampered by injuries and has seen his playing time reduced under Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior.
Homesickness Rumours and United's Opportunity
Recent reports have suggested that the Manchester-born player might be experiencing homesickness and could seek a return to his hometown in 2026, with Manchester United as a potential destination. While Rosenior has dismissed these claims, Wes Brown believes United should capitalise on the situation.
Speaking to BettingLounge, Brown was asked to choose between Palmer and Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers as a potential signing for United. "That's a tough question," Brown admitted. "They're a little bit different to each other. Rogers has got that really high quality to his play but I think Palmer is naturally gifted in some of the things he does."
Why Palmer Fits the United Profile
Brown elaborated on Palmer's suitability for the club, stating: "Palmer has the flair you need to be a Manchester United player. He brings those little bits to the game that your standard players can't. He was born with that special ability to do things with the ball, see runs and play passes."
Despite acknowledging Rogers' qualities, Brown ultimately leaned towards Palmer: "I'd love to see both of them playing together but who would it be if I had to pick one? I keep changing my mind on it but I'd go Palmer. Palmer has shown he has that little bit more confidence, a good kind of arrogance to his game that you need to be a United player. We've seen Palmer do it on the biggest stages."
Transfer Realities and Personal Connections
Brown also injected a note of realism, reminding that transfers depend on multiple factors: "You can't just buy everyone, and it might come down to the fact that you simply don't get a choice either. You have to remember it's on the other club wanting to do business too."
Adding intrigue to the speculation is Palmer's personal history. He has openly admitted to being a Manchester United supporter as a child, despite coming through the academy of rivals Manchester City. Furthermore, he has revealed that he idolised United legend Wayne Rooney during his youth.
While Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has firmly stated that a move is not on the cards, the combination of Palmer's reported personal circumstances, his proven talent, and public endorsement from a club legend like Wes Brown ensures this transfer rumour will persist in the coming months.
