Man Utd refuse to meet £20m Gilberto Mora buyout clause

Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Mexico World Cup sensation Gilberto Mora after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to meet the £20 million buyout clause in the teenager's contract. The 17-year-old Tijuana forward has been monitored by United scouts for six months, but the club will not enter a bidding war with rivals.

Mexico starlet attracts global interest

Mora has impressed at the World Cup, helping co-hosts Mexico reach the last 16. He became the youngest Mexican to appear in the tournament when he debuted in the opening game, and on Tuesday night he starred in a 2-0 win over Ecuador that secured a last-16 spot. He became the second youngest player to start a knockout game after Pele in 1958.

The teenager's performances have drawn strong interest from some of United's biggest rivals, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. His long-term contract with Tijuana includes a £20m buyout clause, designed to secure him a move to a top European club.

Ratcliffe stands firm on value

United have already pulled out of talks to sign Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes this summer, with Ratcliffe unwilling to be drawn into Dutch auctions. United are prioritising value to ensure costs don't escalate.

Mora's agency, which also represents Erling Haaland, is seeking significant agent fees and a lucrative deal for the player. However, United remain cautious given Mora has only 50 senior appearances for Tijuana. According to sources, United will not be held to ransom over a player with limited club experience.

Mora is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in world football, but United's stance is clear: they will not overpay in a competitive market.
