Man Utd Eye Shock James Garner Return as January Transfer Target
Man Utd plot surprise transfer reunion for James Garner

Manchester United are reportedly plotting a sensational return to Old Trafford for former academy star James Garner, with the club monitoring the midfielder's situation at Everton ahead of the January transfer window.

Garner Emerges as Cost-Effective Midfield Option

According to reports, United's recruitment team see the 24-year-old as a cost-effective solution to bolster their midfield ranks this winter. Garner, a product of United's youth system, left the club for Everton in September 2022 in a deal worth an initial £9 million plus add-ons.

His performances under David Moyes at Goodison Park this season have caught the eye, not least a standout display in Everton's recent victory at Old Trafford, which is said to have also attracted the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Contract Situation and Potential Domino Effect

The move is considered viable because Garner is now in the final six months of his current Everton contract. While the Toffees hold an option to extend that deal by a further year and are keen to tie him down to a longer-term agreement, the uncertainty presents an opportunity.

United's interest is framed within a broader transfer strategy. The club is reportedly planning a major summer move for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, with a fee expected to exceed £100 million. A move for Garner in January would represent a more financially prudent piece of business.

Amorim's Stance on Squad Depth

Should a deal materialise, it could prompt questions about the futures of other United players. Youngsters like Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have been mentioned as candidates for loan spells to gain experience.

However, manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that no departures will be sanctioned unless suitable replacements are secured first. "It's going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don't get a substitution," Amorim stated. "We are short. Even with the full squad we are short for something that can happen."

He emphasised the club's lofty expectations, adding: "We are a club with a big responsibility... we need to win every game. It doesn't matter. There are no excuses."

Garner joined United as an Under-8 and progressed through the ranks, making his first-team debut at just 17 years old against Crystal Palace. A return to his boyhood club would mark a remarkable chapter in his career and signal United's intent to add proven, homegrown quality to their squad.
