Manchester United academy star JJ Gabriel has requested to cancel his registration at the club, a move that has sent shockwaves through the football world. The 15-year-old forward, who has yet to make his official first-team debut, featured for Michael Carrick's side during pre-season and has regularly trained with the senior squad.
Gabriel's standout displays and contract request
Gabriel scored 26 goals in 29 games for United's U18s last term and recently netted a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League. Despite this impressive form, his future is now uncertain after asking for his registration to be cancelled, though United have yet to accept his request.
United still feel the situation is rectifiable, but the club's hopes of retaining their academy star could be impacted as the forward approaches his 16th birthday next month. As he is eligible for a European passport, Gabriel could potentially join clubs abroad, unlike British players, who must wait until they turn 18.
Transfer loophole and European interest
The Manchester Evening News reports that United fear Gabriel could use a transfer loophole to secure a move away from Old Trafford. The youngster would be unable to join another Premier League side until the end of the season unless United agree to end his contract, but he could look to join a club abroad.
If Gabriel holds an Irish passport, he would be eligible to join a European side once he turns 16 on October 6. His father Joe O'Cearuill earned caps for the Republic of Ireland during his playing career. United are exploring whether they could prevent Gabriel moving abroad, as the rules are unclear, though any switch would require FIFA approval.
Premier League rules prohibit under-17 players from signing professional deals, while an academy player must be 16 before agreeing to a scholarship. However, United remain in talks to resolve the issue with Gabriel. The situation reportedly arose after the top prospect was not included as part of United's 'A' list for their Champions League squad, meaning he could not play in the win over Sabah last week.
Four transfer options emerge
Following the request to end his United contract, Gabriel has reportedly attracted interest from four huge clubs. The Athletic reports that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all interested in the United starlet.
Spanish giants Real Madrid are claimed to have scouted Gabriel, with reports claiming they have been impressed by his recent performance against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League. Meanwhile, United can choose to reject or challenge Gabriel's request to leave the club, although it is currently unclear whether he could move abroad.
The Premier League rules state: "During your child's registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the club, player and their parent/carer)." It is added: "If the parties don't agree, then any person involved can also ask the Premier League to provide a binding decision on a termination request by making a written application providing full reasons for the request."
