Manchester United have been linked with a £50m move for Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, while Bruno Fernandes has disclosed details of a private conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo. The club are less than a week from returning to action, but the international break has been far from quiet for Michael Carrick and his men.
Developments across town saw Manchester City found guilty of breaching 114 Premier League financial rules. Meanwhile, United have been linked to transfers, with one target being part of the matchday squad against England, though United scouts hoping to see him in action were left disappointed.
United eyeing £50m sensation
United have reportedly entered the race for highly-rated striker Igor Matanovic. According to CaughtOffside, United have been evaluating the Croatia striker internally with plans to table a bid in 2027, either during January or, more probably, next summer, reports the Mirror.
The 23-year-old has elevated his career at Freiburg, aiding the German team to reach last season's Europa League final. With both Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly showing interest, there's a growing sentiment that Matanovic, who is believed to be open to a move, will grace the Premier League.
Freiburg are cognisant of the towering forward's increasing worth and have reportedly upped their asking price from £30m to £50m. Matanovic has netted twice in 14 appearances for his country and was brought on as a substitute during Croatia's 7-0 home loss to England.
Fernandes' private Ronaldo chat
Bruno Fernandes has addressed Cristiano Ronaldo's abrupt departure from international duty. Ahead of Portugal's home match against Norway in Porto on Sunday, Fernandes revealed he had spoken to Ronaldo.
"I had a conversation with Cris. What I told him is that the most important thing, regardless of what happens, is that he will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team and country, for everything he has done in Portugal and around the world."
"He has a reserved place not only among the best of all time, but also in the hearts of the Portuguese people." He added: "We cannot divide ourselves; the national team is one, and all parties should resolve their issues behind closed doors."
"I think that's how it will be, and that everything will end well on both sides. We are out of the matter; we spend a lot of time playing cards and are outside the controversy surrounding this issue, but I ask that the country not be divided, not make choices, and accept all sides."
"Cris will always be the greatest icon of our national team, of world football, and deserves the respect of all Portuguese people, regardless of who likes him more or less."
